Georgie M'Glug : Scrutiny, 10 - 11 December 2010

Shards of Art is pleased to present Scrutiny, an exhibition of photography by acclaimed artist Georgie M’Glug.

The spectator, the perpetually plugged-in microphone or camera. It doesn’t matter whether you are watched with desire or hatred; what’s important is that there should be someone to see you get up, get dressed, smoke, go out, someone to hear you whistle, yawn, or fall silent, even if that someone doesn’t really look or listen… and then suddenly… there is no one.
- Francoise Sagan, The Unmade Bed

Art historical theory privileges the position of the Viewer over the Viewed by imbuing ‘the Gaze’ with un-contested power. But what happens when the Viewed takes control, subverts this theoretical construct and demands scrutiny?

Georgie M’Glug investigates this power struggle as it manifests itself in private relationships, tracing the trajectory of intimacy from its innocent inception to its often violent conclusion. These images capture both the act of defining and redefining ones Self before the desirous Gaze of the Other, as well as the perturbing consequences that result when this intrinsic drive to be watched becomes unhinged from the reliance on external scrutiny.

A London-based artist, Georgie M’Glug graduated from Portsmouth University in 2006 with a degree in English Literature and Creative Arts and is currently pursuing her BTEC National Certificate in Photography at Kensington and Chelsea College. She draws inspiration from the photographic practices of Ryan McGinley, Corinne Day and Nan Goldin. Her work has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum (July 2009) and The Situation Room (November 2010).

Shards of Art, a curatorial partnership launched in 2009 by Amy Shearer and Laura Summerton, seeks to support the work of young, up-and-coming artists. Through collaboration with individuals or groups of artists, Shards of Art fosters and facilitates a connection between the artists’ creative vision and a broad audience.
